Record Shops"Dec.Having worked in and owned a record shop that specialised in rap, garage and r&b music, here are a couple of insights to share with other members:
1- The worst day to try and sell your white label to a shop is a Saturday afternoon. It's a shops busiest day and paying customers at this peak time will come before a new jack's creation.
2 - An average tune is 3 -4 minutes long, however when new tunes come in to the store the assistant will listen to it for a maximum of 1 minute(if you are really lucky). What usually happens is the assistant will "needle drop" that is put the record on the turntable and drop the needle on key sections of the record for say 4 bars at a time. For example an instrumental UK garage tune, the needle will be moved from the intro to the drop(where the baseline kicks in) and onto a middle section of the tune. For vocal tunes an assistant will look for say the intro, a bit of the first verse and some chorus.
3 If your new tune is being sold to stores by an indie distributor, the same principle applies.
Example- In London the distributors van comes around once a week. The driver will have a selection of say 20 tunes on average. Lets say 10 are current releases and the other 10 are new the shop assistant will use the "needle drop method" to skate through the tracks. To save himself and the distributor time
Your tune will also almost certainly be sold over the phone to stores outside the company's area. This time it's a telesales assistant at the distribution company playing those key points in a record to the shop assistant down a phone line.Again in a week there may be 5 new tunes or there may be 10 new tunes, either way your tune will get "needle dropped"
Remember the people involved in the sale process of a record will just through experience know where these key points of the tune are on a record.(either by the cut of the vinyl or just a feeling they have). If they can't find any of these points, they can't believe in the tune and therefore they will not be able to buy or sell the tune.

Tip of the week: "If you are a music maker, a drummer or a producer, get yourself a small tin [a 'roll-up' tobacco tin is perfect].
Now put small shot pellets into the tin and Gaffer tape it to the top side of the snare drum, leaving as much metal of the tin exposed. You now have a sizzling snare sound from the top and the bottom of the snare, so that with close miking you will get a mighty exciting snare sound without the awful 'tok' that you get from playing loud with a close mic. on top.
You can change the contents of the tin [I use sand, sometimes], and also the amount of content, to create unusual and highly professional results."

"What do you call one lawyer on the moon....
A problem!
What do you call two lawyers on the moon...
A problem!
What do you call one hundred lawyers on the moon..
A problem!
What do you call all the lawyers on the moon....
Problem solved!."
