"One Minute With Dec"

"My Emails are written in good humour, and should be read with a smile"

By now you will have seen the separate announcement on the honour that 'Marshall Amplification' bestowed on me this week.  The silly story is that I received the invitation, months ago, to a celebration party for Marshall's forty years of providing the best guitar amps known to man.

I use the JMP1 module and the Marshall Valvestate rack module amp on stage.  I also use the JMP1 for my studio work and the results speak for themselves.  If you are a guitar player, and you have not tasted the sound of Marshall, just get yourself along to your local guitar shop and try one....at full whack!  Honest they won't mind.  Tell them Jim Marshall said it was OK.

I couldn't go to the party as I was on a short concert tour with my band.  I should have cancelled the tour!  I didn't know that night was going to be so special.  Every major Marshall dealer from around the world was there and every major guitar player was there!  Silly me...again.  But they couldn't tell me about the award....it was all secret.

The mountain came to Mohamed

So I ended up with Jim Marshall himself coming down to Eastbourne...he took me out to dinner and stayed over.  I thought: "how strange?  What is he up to".  I invited him to dinner on Wednesday and he made the announcement at the table with all our friends.  As he raised his glass of Scottish 'Jura' to toast me, I nearly fell over.  He announced that I was declared one of the top fifty contributors to music in the past forty years.  And only ten of them were from the UK.  Strangely, I was the only Irish one.  By the way, if you ever bump into Jim at a music trade show or such, just quietly go to the bar, buy a large Scottish malt [Lefroiche is his favourite] and just give it to him.....say: "Dec told me"...just watch his face light up.  You see, in life, when you have the amount of money Jim has, from his success, no one gives you anything...they just take all the time...so do that - and watch his face.

Jim's chauffeur, John, quietly told me that each of the gold plated amps presented cost £5,000 to manufacture and each one is worth £10,000 immediately, although none will be available to the public, obviously!

Can you get all the info. necessary to make a Hit?

I know a lot of Non-Members of The Serious Writers Guild read this 'One Minute' each week and probably wonder why I push The Guild so much.  They think: "what more can Dec possibly give me....he tells me everything in the 'One Minutes'"

Fact is that that these 'One Minutes' are chock-a-block full of 'information'.  They are full of stuff that I hear on a day-to-day basis.  For instance, I was with one of the agent/managers involved with 'Fame Academy' last night [Kaplan Kaye].  So I got amazing inside info. from him.  We were at a benefit [Royal Lancaster Hotel, London] raising £500,000 for Leukaemia Research.  Did you know that the UK is now the biggest fount of knowledge re. Leukaemia Research in the world?  I sat beside the boss, Professor Ray Powells, who told me how the UK research is making the cure rate of leukaemia sufferers soar world-wide.

The ten month course, 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music', that I am always encouraging you to get involved with, is much more than 'knowledge' - it is a complete method.

In music, 'methodology' is far more important than information and knowledge.

A genuine ten month 'life changing' and 'career changing' course is vastly more important than the bits of latest info. I give in my 'One Minutes'.   But you are probably realising that - in your quest for success?

"If only someone would should me the method."

I had a wonderful email from a new Member, Lanre Akanni, giving force and confirmation for one of my 'methods'.  This will help to focus your mind on just one aspect of a Hit Toon.
Record Shops

 "Dec.

Having worked in and owned a record shop that specialised in rap, garage and r&b music, here are a couple of insights to share with other members:

1- The worst day to try and sell your white label  to a shop is a Saturday afternoon. It's a shops busiest day and paying customers at this peak time will come before a new jack's creation.

2 - An average tune is 3 -4 minutes long, however when new tunes come in to the store the assistant will listen to it for a maximum of 1 minute(if you are really lucky).  What usually happens is the assistant will "needle drop" that is put the record on the turntable and drop the needle on key sections of the record for say 4 bars at a time. For example an instrumental UK garage tune, the needle will be moved from the intro to the drop(where the baseline kicks in) and onto a middle section of the tune.  For vocal tunes an assistant will look for say the intro, a bit of the first verse and some chorus.

3 If your new tune is being sold to stores by an indie distributor, the same principle applies.

Example- In London the distributors van comes around once a week.  The driver will have a selection of say 20 tunes on average.  Lets say 10 are current releases and the other 10 are new the  shop assistant will use the "needle drop method" to skate through the tracks.  To save himself and the distributor time

Your tune will also almost certainly be sold over the phone to stores outside the company's area. This time it's a telesales assistant at the distribution company playing those key points in a record to the shop assistant down a phone line.Again in a week there may be 5 new tunes or  there may be 10 new tunes, either way your tune will get "needle dropped"

Remember the people involved in the sale process of a record will just through experience  know where these key points of the tune are on a record.(either by the cut of the vinyl or just a feeling they have).  If they can't find any of these points,  they can't believe in the tune and therefore they will not be able to buy or sell the tune.

Speak to you soon

 Lanre Akanni"

So how do you design a Hit?

In line with what I said in the opening paragraphs I will not disclose the 'methodology' behind creating a certain, double-died Hit to non-members.  That would not be fair. Agreed? I discovered, right from the first moment I was in the Record Industry, what was the most instantaneous secret of a Hit.  And when I heard my first white label, pre-production pressing, of the toon from the first session, I just felt so thrilled that my 'discovery' was absolutely correct.  The toon just smelled of a Hit...from that one idea...it had Hit written in every groove.  I had goose bumps just listening to it...has that ever happened to you?  And it proved it by being the longest in the chart for that year.

I played it in concert for the last two nights....and yes, the magic is still there.  By the way, we had Martin Davies on drums.  Now the best session drummer in the UK.  He got involved with me at age 15.  It is mind blowing the way he has taken every trick, every idea, every bit of advice and applied it.  In other words: "The Methodology".  After the concert last night it was a joy to have so many 'punters' rave about the drums.  [see a great tip from Martin in the 'tips' section below]

Have you ever had that warm, luscious feeling about a Potential Hit track that you have created?  Try it sometime....better than s*x?

Hmmmmmmm!  The jury is out on that one!

Tip of the week "If you are a music maker, a drummer or a producer, get yourself a small tin [a 'roll-up' tobacco tin is perfect].

Now put small shot pellets into the tin and Gaffer tape it to the top side of the snare drum, leaving as much metal of the tin exposed.  You now have a sizzling snare sound from the top and the bottom of the snare, so that with close miking you will get a mighty exciting snare sound without the awful 'tok' that you get from playing loud with a close mic. on top.

You can change the contents of the tin [I use sand, sometimes], and also the amount of content, to create unusual and highly professional results."
