I get loads and loads of advertising Emails...most of them drive me mad, probably you react the same way? But occasionally one jumps out and grabs me by the throat. Just like the headline above...certainly got my attention.
It wasn't aimed at the music guys, but doesn't it have a good ring to it? Most of the guys who contact me [outside of The Serious Writers Guild] seem to think that there is a magic 'fix-it' that will suddenly give them an instant boost to give them a $Million career, without having put any effort at all into it, apart from getting out of bed at 12 noon every day, watching some MTV, then going down to the cyber cafe to chew the cud for a little with other 12 noon risers. Then, around to a friends to cadge a bit of grub....watch a bit of TV or listen to his latest R&B acquisitions and moan about the fact there is not more R&B recognition in the media.
Then, back home, thinking of switching the PC music program on and spending a while working on that latest beat....but hey....Charlie rings....."it's really happenin' man....we gotta go see de crew tonight, man...there's plenny of time for work....we can do it - tomorrow".....
It's easy to drift from day to day - in music...well, isn't it?
But, let me tell you, all the successful guys know that this is a fixed business of 10-5 every day....being business like...knowing your goals and knowing that each day you are honing your craft...honing yourself....honing your salespitch....getting yourself fine tuned to be that mega $Million star....that $Million songwriter, music maker, producer, performer......and not the dreamer, the hoper and the wisher!
Goals, goals, goals....write them down, dream them, eat them, sleep them...then watch yourself achieve them, quietly and methodically, with honest, hard work. There is no 'quick-fix', quick aspirin, or quick band-aid, that will give you a world class career in music without the extreme effort...there is only knowledge, know-how and a burning ambition to kick everyone out of your way - on your way to the top.
I look at the success stories of guys who join 'The Serious Writers Guild' and I wonder..."how come they had the sense and the ambition to takes concrete steps towards success and all those other guys didn't?" Beats me!

My Email questions raise a giggle!
I have some fun questions...well, not fun really, but I do have to giggle sometimes. I know the guys don't mean them as funny when the question is written...let me share one with you:
Question from Email : "Out of interest, as far as your concerned, where do backing dancers stand?"
My answer:
Laura.....
The girls in the office insisted I answer: "at the back"!!!!
Seriously, I'm sure you meant it as a genuine question.
There are now two totally separate type of 'back dancers'...
My life partner, Sandy, is a trained dancer and played hundreds of times at The Palladium, TV, Royal Variety shows etc., danced with Nureyev. My daughter is not, but does 'back dancing' [plus mega back singing, plus TV etc.] She is back dancing this Saturday in Cardiff.
So you see, Laura, both ways are possible, but, just like music, you have to 'learn your business'...there is no easy way...there is no 'get rich quick scheme'. The money comes to those who study their craft, know their craft, and are ready to deliver when the time comes.
