The Members' "Thank You's and Success Stories" (would you like to be here?):

SUCCESS.....SUCCESS.......SUCCESS......is your story here?

"Eventually I got 'Kavana' to sit down and fill out the forms for his PPL royalties like you advised. You made me a lot of money from PPL in the past and now his first cheque was £20,000. Thank you Dec" [Rosemarie - just back from L.A.]

Thank you for the program, you know it's good, I know it's good, but I have to thank you for putting so much effort into it's production. If a guy like you at the top is prepared to give so much then that is where I want to be." [Dan Hall - Serious Writers Guild Member]

" My band 'Glass' has just secured another 3 date support with All About Eve following a successful slot with them on their last tour. We have also been offered paid session work on a bizarre local poet's album - I took the opportunity of offering the resources of my home studio and engineering and production services. I wonder where I got all that from??. To top it all an Australian author and good friend has asked me to create music for a project in Oz which could involve living down under while being well paid to develop the musical side of a fascinating arts project." [Dave Menzies - Serious Writers Guild Member]

"My group O2 (like oxygen) won the FONAM contest in September 2002 (the month I got involved in your program)" [Alvaro Fabian Rabaquino - Serious Writers Guild Member - Uruguay]

"Where else on the internet/in the world can one undergo such courses..it's more or less like going to e-school...I know your programme has changed my life and my music...I guess this puts a smile in your face..and besides this is no booboo..it is the truth..Dec you are the GREATEST teacher I have ever come across..and I want you to know that I will NEVER let you down..you deserve the credits. Dec," [Balogun - Serious Writers Guild - Nigeria]

"One Minute With Dec"

"My Emails are written in good humour, and should be read with a smile"

The importance of gigging:

Of all the reasons I see for non-success in songwriters, musicians, singers is the one point of 'not taking the gigging side' seriously enough. Take gigging seriously and success is staring you in the face.

It has always been a mystery to me how songwriters feel that they can sit anonymously at home...jot out a few lyrics, put a bit of a melody to it...send it off to an unsuspecting record company or publishing company and make $Millions...No, No, No, No.

It has never worked that way and never will.

Let me say that I have the utmost respect for the 'fun' writers, the guys who just do it for the heck of it...to have a bundle of fun and maybe an odd time reap some benefit...but here I am dealing with the guys who take their writing seriously, in a professional way, and are aiming to have a lifetime career in this exciting business. 'Kavana', above in the success stories, got an initial royalty cheque, just for the air play of a hit, for £20,000. That is separate from the writing or publishing royalties [he gets an awful lot more for those]...PPL is purely the royalty for his recording performance being played on radio and in pubs etc. VPL [Video Performance Limited] will bring in yet a stack more....

Successful writers usually gig:

There has rarely been a successful songwriter who has not gigged. You just have to have the feel for the 'live' stuff to know, for instance, will your material work when played to an audience? Even the 'dance' guys realise that today. Most, if not all of them, are out there DJ'ing...so they know that their stuff works!

Even the likes of Gilbert and Sullivan were steeped in the 'performance' thing. Diane Warren is so familiar with 'performance'...she knows it inside out from working with all the great performers. Neil Diamond....could not give away his songs until he realised that he had to get out there and 'do it'.

The performing side is the final notch

To me, the gigging performing side is the final notch in the key that will unlock the fortune. I can think, immediately of three stunning talents whose only fault is that they will not get off their butts and gig. What a waste. And although I have encouraged them, cajoled them, even bribed them...they just cannot see that simple fact! Sad....what a waste of a lifetime talent!

One such talent, a great R&B writer, great looking, terrific ideas...great enthusiasm, is struggling with this very obvious 'flaw' in her Show Business career....she worries about every aspect of live gigging...what she does not do is just get out there and do it.

She wrote:

"Dec - I mentioned to you that the girls in the band wanted to change the lyrics to my song called: 'Girls'.

When I emailed you recently, you said exactly what I thought, which was that there is no point right now, it would be a waste of time and we need to get on with gigging. I explained to them why there need be no lyric changing at this point...but I have recently discovered that they have rewritten the lyrics anyway, against my wishes and I personally am upset about this...especially as one of them has taken it upon herself to "copyright" these new lyrics.

Time is now being further wasted by this song being re-recorded using Logic at a home "studio" for no real purpose except for ego boosting.

The fact that they changed the song has nothing to do with being protective, it's about the fact that they have, in my eyes, betrayed my trust and judgement. I have constantly told them that we need to take the action outlined by yourself in releases and so on, but they simply cannot see the logic in any of it.

I personally at this point feel that I am wasting time with this band...that it's time to leave and gig solo with backing singers, (eventually backing musicians) until I put together a new band.

I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate your help and advice and feel that I have to put into practise what I have learnt from you elsewhere, and not with this band.

Do you think I am in the wrong here?

Regards

E****r".

I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.

Margaret Thatcher

My Reply:

Hi E****r...don't fret...don't worry...this is just your first Baptism....but check out that Maggie Thatcher quote above....

You will find, from my experience, and from the experience of other successful guys in the business, that getting involved with band members is a 'nightmare'...and it never gets better. It is with you for your whole career. My brother, Con and myself, even have it at our stage....we are on our new tour and the problems get bigger as the tour goes on....but you find that, in life, the successful people are the 'problem solvers'...I love solving problems.

That is why so many bands are 'one man operations' [Sting? Mick Jagger? B'yonce'.]. The bands, who have lasted, have always had one or two guys at the core, except for the family ones [Beach Boys, for instance]. Status Quo, 'Queen', 'The Shadows'. 'Eternal', 'Oasis' are all 'two people at the core' situations. Think of The Beatles. Think of my band.

You will always find that the others in a band can be obstructive, destructive, ego driven, lazy as sin, and certainly will not have the 'drive' that you will have. They certainly will not have the 'knowledge' because they can't be bothered to learn. You have to, of necessity, be 'THE BOSS' [they will hate you for that] and you must treat them as 'employees'. You are not in this business to be 'liked', you only want to be 'respected'. That statement comes from mountains of experience, and reading every 'team building' and 'management skills' book....however, Show Biz people are totally different to 'ordinary job' people. You are dealing with 'ego filled', 'nervous' idiots [sorry about that, but true!]

Just getting out there and doing it

I have always advised just getting out there and doing it. Two Peavey Speakers on poles and a back track. Then get another musician/backsinger who can mime and eventually learn the parts and become a 'live performer [still with back track].

Then - as the money comes in, increase the band size, using the same principles. Along the way, you can find out very easily are they committed [few will be] are they 'loved' by the audience [the most important point]. Do they LOVE performing and get the ultimate buzz from it? Would they do it for nothing if they were asked?

At that point in your career, you should be making a few bob, so the merchandising kicks in...CD's, posters, tapes, pictures, brochures....increasing data base/ fan base as you go [so important for that eventual record deal].

Suddenly, you will find you have a band 'UNDER YOUR DIRECTION' and control...that is 'making money'. You will have fired the 'no-hopers' and replaced them with exciting 'good lookers and movers'. All the guys will want to be in on the action....'cos they want to be on 'Top Of The Pops'. That is the biggest 'hold' you will ever have over them. "Do you want to be with me when I'm on MTV at Number One?". Simple question...that means a lot.

The whole deal is self financing

Work out a deal right from the start. You make sure you get 50% of the money after agency etc. commission. The rest is split between the band. So they understand: 'the better the show, the better the next venue booking'...the better the venue, more bums on seats and more money to share. With your 50%, you control the equipment side. It's a nightmare when other band members are involved with purchase, storage etc. You control it - but THEY HUMP IT AND SET IT UP. Make sure of that. YOU are the star.

Their REAL JOB is to interface with the public

Those girls you have are making the most basic, fundamental mistake. 'The music is the easy bit'. And if you don't believe that, check out what all the biggest producers in the world say. Amateurs always want to get involved with making the music, engineering, recording, mixing, programming, mastering.....whereas their REAL JOB is to interface with the public and present the music to the ones they hope are going to buy it....make sense? It's the 'looking good', being fancied by everyone who sees you, the photographs, the shows, the TV appearances, the Videos that make the artist...not the music.

It certainly makes sense to me!

Regards

PS: Telling people where you get your knowledge is not a good idea, by the way, George Bush doesn't tell everyone, Colin Powell doesn't, Mick Jagger doesn't....Robbie? Get respected as 'one who knows'.

As this is a 'gigging special' let me take you on a trip to a different angle....listen to this Email:

Hello Dec,

Just been speaking to Vicci about forming a band and she was very helpful.

I wanted to ask you if you thought advertising in The Stage was a good idea. I'm only interested in people with a professional attitude. (Obviously!)

I've found, in the past, that a big article in the local paper about my looking for singers for a close-part harmony singing group (while ostensibly a wonderful 'leg up' from my tame journalist) resulted in many unsuitable replies (including an enthusiastic but very old lady from the local nursing home!!!) So while I may well try for a similar article (this time being even more specific about what I'm looking for), I don't want to rely on this.

Vicci suggested local universities/colleges (I don't want young students, but who knows, there might be some more mature people out there.)

She also suggested I talk to all the local rehearsal and recording studios. Very good idea.

And then she mentioned that you might be able to put me in touch with Guild members in my area. That would be great. My only question there would be........ it's particularly performers not composers I'm after.

(Yes, yes! I know it's almost the same thing!!! And I want creative people working with me. But I was once in the position where, while working on one of my songs in a studio, someone else has taken over my session and started doing one of his. I was very young and couldn't handle it then. I wouldn't allow that to happen now, but don't want to start off with people who are pulling in a different direction from the outset.)

That reminds me. What about the Serious Performers' Guild? Should I be subscribing to that or have I all that info. as part of my Writers' Guild stuff? (I've just started the Masterclass too.)

Do you have any ideas for me for where are the best places for me to start looking for professional-attitude band members and singers?

Thank you.

My Reply:

I have very little regard for 'The Stage'....an advert will cost a tidy sum...but you should get a good response.

Sadly, just like your last experience you will get a lot of time wasters.

>>>>>>.there might be some more mature people out there.)<<<<<<

You could be on the wrong tact altogether here...you need the talent as young as possible... it's all 'yoof' culture today...be careful...the adult audience does not exist...it is a myth.

The great writers and the great music makers have the utmost respect for all music PARTICULARLY music that sells....because, throughout history, the only way to judge music was by the food it put on the table.
