  • "First of all, Dec, another big Thank You for your advice on my indie dance label contract.

By the way, I am deeply disappointed by the legal services offered by both BASCA and the Musicians’ Union, as all they do is pass on your contract to a solicitor who is then supposed to call you.  After 9 weeks of waiting for the BASCA solicitor’s call I have given up on them. I don’t want to knock BASCA entirely here, but all they seem to be interested in is to crack open the booze and/or go to the pub.

Again Thank you -  Ralf Gerhart [Serious Writers Guild Member]"

"Joan [Joan Martin] had a great article written about her in 'Sound on Sound' magazine this month.

We've since had approaches from all over the world from producers and writers (mainly US, Northern Europe & Asia Pacific) who want to work with her.

And she has just been invited to perform as guest artiste at the Singapore 2003 National New Year Countdown Celebrations. Flying her out, hotel and a fee! You'd be proud! Oh, and she'll be singing live to 100,000 people."

    "One Minute With Dec"

"My Emails are written in good humour, and should be read with a smile"

Well my "in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to obtain." quote, last week, certainly got some reaction!

    John Davies wrote:
    Hi Dec

Your Mark Twain quote in this weeks 'one minute' rang a bell. This is a true story. Some years ago I worked with a guy who sold franchises (priced around £20,000). He was very very good at it. One day he told me how he did it. Firstly he said I look at their CVs, their experience in this trade, their financial status. I look for any fault or negative I can find. Then I tell them they can't have one. Works a treat. They are then put in a position of having to convince me to take their 20 grand!!

    Good innit.

How about giving my courses free?

I am often tempted to give my 'How to Make A $Million From your Music' ten month course to guys who can't afford it for free....BUT....

Fact is that I have only had one guy send me a thank-you .... does that shock you?  Anything for nothing is perceived as being worth nothing.  So if you are ever tempted to ask me...don't! [grin].  As they say in the shops "a refusal often offends".

Have you ever noticed that giving your promo CD's to friends and relations never encourages them to buy one?  Same thing really.

    Fame Academy on UK Telly

It is quite amazing in the UK at the moment how all the advice and thoughts on 'Fame Academy' on TV is straight from my 'How To Make A $Million' course.  However, there are vital points which are not being brought over to the 'wannabe' stars.  Those vital points are the difference between being a lasting, career minded, music star and just being a bit of talent fodder owned by a Record Company for a year.  That is all the winners are promised: "a Superstar lifestyle for a year".  After that?

'Hear'say' [winners of 'Popidol' in the UK] have certainly seen that come true.  Or was it the fact that they had not the sense to learn their business properly.  For that is what we are in:- a BUSINESS.  The fun and the lifestyle is merely an 'add-on' to a deadly serious, hard as nails, cut-throat, business that will either earn you $Millions over a lifetime career or give you a short lived, one year, thrashing around the world and then finding out the bank balance is zero, career!  Explain that to your parents - who believed everything the papers said about the supposed $Millions being generated.  Yep, being generated...but for whom?

Advice on the logic of correct 'pricing':

I get a lot of the Members of the 'Serious Writers Guild' ask me about pricing.  Whether it be CD's which they want to sell to shops or the public or maybe a book they have written - or even a course like 'How to Make A $Million From your Music'.

My quote last week [see below] brought many Emails. One of the guys wanted my advice on pricing his studio services.  He had an idea to market a service producing demos for songwriters.  His suggested price for a FULL service using, in his opinion, top of the range studio gear, was £47 [about $65].  So I gave him my advice - honestly and sincerely.  If you are going to sell something, maybe in a 'live show' merchandise sense or maybe on the Internet, this may be a great help for you:

    Hi Stuart,

I read a heck of a lot on the subject of 'direct mail', 'mail order' and Stuart Goldsmith and others are very close associates of mine. We swop and trade information. 'The Golden Mailbox' is a brilliant course by Stuart and Ted Nicholas...just click on the link on my 'One Minute With Dec' and you will link to the Medina site...that is where you find Stuart.

When I 'test' a price, I keep a careful check of the 'successful' pricings. The figure '7' has been proved to be 'the best'. So the logic is to use that figure. The most successful campaign ever, in the history of selling, was to offer 'Life' magazine for subscription $77. My next product '57 Secrets of a Hit Record' will be priced at £57.

Now - working your pricing out logically would bring me to this:

The price you ask is illogical and 'silly' [I don't mean that to be rude, just honest...the way I react to it]. I know the price of good studios, I use them a lot, although I have an excellent 'today' studio myself. For instance, I will be mastering two tracks this week at ICC, using their 'Sadie' equipment [which I don't have...it is specialised, mastering computer equipment]. That will cost £30 per hour. Now that is to just use a little room with the mastering 'expert', a computer screen and monitors...so....your price?

You are attempting to convince the public that you will use a mega studio, computers, modules, effects, compressors, live room, engineer, producer, musicians, singers...and all for...was it £47?

It is not 'believable'. And 'believability' is the cornerstone of salesmanship.

Everything I offer is 'believable'. My books, courses will make anyone £Millions...because they contain the know-how and tricks etc. that I have used, Mick Jagger has used, Destiny's Child, Dr Dre, LL Cool J, NSync, etc. etc. etc.....so if we can make £Millions, anyone can do it.

That is the 'believability'. The fact that only 3% of my Members will actually read the stuff 'carefully' and actually action the information is almost irrelevant. They still know that if they wanted to, they have the information to have a mega career.  At very least they get the £Million information. It is sad, nevertheless, because I wish success on everyone. So my products are 'proven' and 'believable'.  The success stories speak for themselves.

Is your price 'believable'? The answer has got to be: "at £47, Nope!"...at £3,475 plus VAT ...YES!  At £277...just about believable, provided the songwriter has never been to a good studio. A normal, ordinary, Hit quality, small studio costs £600 per day.

By the way, I never hire out my studio, there is not enough money in hiring.

I hope this helps....the best way for you to price it is to 'test'. Change the price each week and eventually [if you have enough through-put) you will find the optimum price.

    Regards....

I always look forward to hearing from Ian Warrener.  He joined our 'Serious Writers Guild' and since then started his own P.A. design Company.  He custom built monitors for my studio which I must say are 'AWESOME'.  I have learned so much from Ian about the 'black art' of speaker design and the technology involved in great speaker reproduction.  Just listen to what he says about the basic idea of connections:

A basic check that could save MAJOR PROBLEMS

A major cause of problems in any system can be cured quickly and easily! How?

    By checking all cables regularly!

Cables and connectors are probably the single biggest cause of problems in a system.  Often these faults can intermittent and so difficult to trace. An old solder bucket can create noise and disconnection. A loose or badly designed cable retention system will put undue pressure on the joints and as wires become loose partial disconnection's can cause intermittent faults and dangerous short circuits.

As far as signal cables are concerned, wherever possible balanced, shielded cables should be used. They cut down induced noise and can increase overall levels dramatically. XLR connectors are my preference and I always use I.D.C (insulation Displacement Connection) rather than solder buckets, they work by cutting through insulation and trapping wire, suffering less over time and with use. I also use gold pin versions for the best signal path possible but standard pin are still much better than jacks or RCA phono’s. And it has to be said, Neutrik’s cable retention system is probably the best although Amphenol are close, with an easier assembly IDC unit.

    Always specify gold binding posts:

These days, other than bare cables onto gold binding posts, I feel Neutrik speakon’s are the only way to terminate loudspeaker cables; High capacity and self cleaning, they offer a twist lock bayonet system to prevent accidental removal and are available in many alternative formats.

Onto the speaker cable, the bigger diameter of the conductors, the lower their overall resistance (over the same length), the better the performance of the system due to lower losses. The best conductors are made from 100% oxygen free copper (OFC), providing much improved conductivity over time and reducing signal losses still further.

The insulation should be flexible to avoid breakage and high capacitance to reduce induced signals (‘crosstalk’ from parallel cables) especially where long runs are used. Rubber is to be avoided as it degrades too quickly when exposed to humidity and sunlight, so various polyethylene and polyvinyl compounds are used giving greatly extended cable life.

    Signal loss table:

Just Email me to receive a cable loss table (courtesy of Crest).  It demonstrates just how much effect speaker cable conductor diameter has on the associated losses. Also note that losses double from 8 to 4 ohms, and double again at 2 ohms! (one more reason not to use 2 ohm loads).

    One last quick note

Remember each connection is actually at least 3 connections, often 5 (wire crimped to spade terminal, spade terminal to connector pin, connector bar to connector bar, connector pin back to wire). So by reducing connections you can improve overall signal integrity exponentially. This is yet another reason for wiring direct rather than via a patch bay if at all possible.

Feel free to forward any questions you may have and Ian will always do his best to answer them or give him a call on 01909474977 (U.K.) if he is not there he will get back to you as soon as he is (usually 24 hrs max)

Tip of the week:  "For that high class, expensive, solo vocal sound found in the great major ballads [Celine Dion, Brian Adams etc] go for the oldest trick in the producer's book:

Feed the vocal signal into a machine that will give accurate timed delay.  Then send the signal from the delay machine [old quarter inch tape machine with varispeed is perfect] into a Lexicon or similar top quality reverb unit giving straight reverb.  The result will be a glassy, detached reverb that you should now compress and the result will be ....WOW!

Do not confuse this method with the normal pre-delay on a standard reverb unit....the difference is chalk and cheese!"

Gag of the Week [still no shortage of gags from subscribers!]:

"Little Mary was not the best student in Sunday school. Usually she slept
through class. One day the teacher called on her while she was napping,

"Tell me, Mary, who created the universe?"

When Mary didn't stir, little Johnny, an altruistic boy seated behind her,
took a pin and jabbed her in the rear. "God Almighty!!" shouted Mary and the
teacher said, "Very good", and Mary fell back asleep.

A while later the teacher asked Mary, "Who is our Lord and Saviour?" But,
Mary didn't even stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came to the
rescue and stuck her again. "Jesus Christ!!" shouted Mary and the teacher
said, "Very good", and Mary fell back asleep.

Then the teacher asked Mary a third question.

"What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?" And again
Johnny jabbed her with the pin. This time Mary jumped up and shouted, "If
you stick that damn thing in me one more time, I'll break it in half!!" The
    teacher fainted.
