Gosh, quite an influx of new Subscribers to 'One Minute' this week...so.....welcome!
This is not a nice Sunday morning discussion group, the present Subscribers know that by now, it is me, Dec, helping as much as I possibly can to wipe all those preconceived, music shop, Music Internet, music magazine, music newsgroup ideas from your crusty brain.  Sound cruel and nasty?  It's not meant to be.  I just see it all the time as I progress [yep, my skills get better every single day, and I hope your's do too] through this wonderful industry.
I have never had the luxury of thinking of this profession as a 'bit of fun' or 'a bit of enjoyment'.  I am a 'tough nut', hard as nails 'pro'....all I am interested in is money making music....cos that is how music is judged...by the amount of money generated.  It was the same for Beethoven and it is the same for 'Destiny's Child' and for Dec Cluskey and for YOU.

The smile on the bank manager's face

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy every second of it...and I get immense pleasure from making music BUT...and it's a huge BUT.....I get much more pleasure out of the 'success' angle of music.  The standing ovations, the record sales, the smile on the bank manager's face.  And that is what I encourage all, who seek advice from me, to do.

It is rare that a piece, written and performed, then produced and mastered, that has real artistic quality, will ever have commercial success as a 'right'.  The music industry has never worked that way.

Pop [ular] music has always been created with a view to making money and if the piece is commercially successful and then endures and is appreciated for it's artistic qualities, then that is a double bonus.  Few toons have managed it.  The 'Queen' stuff is in that category.  'Bohemian Rhapsody' seems to always win the votes for 'best Pop song ever'.  But make no mistake, Freddie, Brian, John and Roger set out to capture the imagination of the Record Buying Public when they painstakingly pieced that magical piece together.  The fact that it endured is the extra bonus after the $Millions, that it made, were duly received by the guys and spent and enjoyed....they knew all about the 'killer attitude' needed for success.

my whole world changed - I became a success."

New Music, New Ideas, New Production Techniques:

I am in the middle of heavy recording at the moment and my brain is flooded with the latest production and recording techniques.  I am listening non-stop to music, music, music...all today, chart and future stuff.  I am going out on a ledge with my productions to be as 'tomorrow' as possible.  I am taking chances, I am taking risks.  I don't want any of my stuff to be polite, nice and most of all, 'artistic' and pleasant on the ear.  I want it to be commercial, 'rip your ears off' and 'in yer face' to the extreme.  And I would advise you, in everything you do, to think the same way.

There are no 'second prizes' in this game.

You either have massive success or you are never heard of...there is almost no 'in-between'.  The current record sales graph makes sure of that.  There has never been a period in the record game where the difference between Number One and the Number Two, most weeks, is so marked.  Also, it is a period in time where there are dozens and dozens of 'One Hit Wonders'.  This is mostly through the 'bedroom studio'  dance trend.

Got a nice Email today from one of the Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild':

As you may know I'm a music industry consultant working with young unemployed musicians on the Government's 'New Deal' scheme.

Our Government want a 'New Deal' No.1.hit. They want someone to come through the ranks of the unemployed as part of the 'New Deal' for Musicians scheme and MAKE IT.

FOR THE RECORDING MY CHOSEN MUSIC PRODUCERS ARE:

ANDY WHITMORE,  BRIAN MAY,  DEC CLUSKEY,  DIZZI,  KYLIE BORG,  PHIL COLLINS,  & STEVE LEVINE

Quite a compliment ... but the real reason for including that is so anyone, in the UK, knows that the Government, truly, will help with your music career.  I helped a Member, the other week, acquire a full list of studio equipment for home - as part of that 'New Deal'.  Local Councils will almost definitely fund guys for the ten months of 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' as it is educational and gives guys a proper chance at success in the music game...it is not just a 'pleasant read'.

You can imagine the number of Emails I get with questions about songwriting, recording and production.  Sadly, I find 95% of the guys rooted in the past, so that title above is very apt for this week.  One guy [he is now hugely successful in Germany after taking the 'How To Make A $Million' course] asked me guitar recording questions then told me he likes ancient gear....WHAAAAAT?

I advised him about 'today' techniques - he said:

"I do notice a large difference in my results these days. Thanks to who? Dat Dec over dere in England.

I want nothing more than to record with a real Marshall. I love them too. Maybe a JMP-1 is in order. I know what you mean about the sound. Boss effects sound dated, and cheap. Bring on the valves!!!"

His B/V's were straight out of the ark....I explained about having a proper vocal arrangement that 'stands up on it's own without any music'.

"I must be more picky with the Vocal arrangement. Spank me again!!!  I am doing the 3 track unison on each harmony but I will try the hard left/right spread with echo and chorus. Gotcha!!!

Also, why does my vocal seem to lack in clarity and punch? I record with good levels and don't overdo the compression or effects but it never seems to cut through to my satisfaction. Something to do with frequencies, I'm sure, but how to remedy it?

Also, pre-delay.
When affecting a vocal track with reverb, I followed your instructions about dividing the BPM by 60.
But if the track runs at 120 and I divide by 60 I get 2. Help!!!!!

Here is my reply....you may get good help from this:

Boss effects went out with the Do-Do's. I sold mine too long ago to remember...although the old Boss guitar compressor was a dynamite bit of kit...as was the delay. My guitar sound in concert last night was 'HUGE'. That is with Marshall JMP1 rack, Digitech Effects....all midi pedal controlled from centre stage [the rack is on side of stage out of site]....long midi lead plus long, high quality, guitar lead.... stereo 'speaker simulator' output to the main stadium PA and a 'Marshall Valvestate' rack mounted amplifier driving a wedge speaker in front of me...just for me to hear.  Perfect live guitar - and the exact same gear gives me my sound in the studio with no hassle or wasted time.

You said: "and don't overdo the compression or effects but it never seems to cut through to my satisfaction"....that is the reason why your vocals haven't got edge...you don't use quarter the amount of compression you should. You must compress to get a sound - not compress to even out. Too much compression just softens and eliminates attack. But enough compression to bring out the 'edge and breath' then boosted on the compression unit will give you total 'in yer face' 'hard on the ears' vocal sound...and this is what we aim for today. The 'output gain' is the most important knob on a compressor. But be careful of compressor inherent noise. I trust you are using a proper outboard compressor and not a digital 'card' type...they are useless.

You have the 'timing' completely wrong. Divide the BPM INTO 60....that gives the milliseconds per beat or crotchet. Then divide by two or four to give eights or sixteens, whichever effect you want to create. Sixteens from an echo effect is what we call: 'slapback'. On a predelay patch with very short, bright reverb will give 'vocal enhancement'.

And always remember it is the 'performance' that creates the excitement and not the effects. Production only makes a good performance great, and can do nothing for a mediocre performance. That is why I concentrate so much on the 'aping' exercises...which again, I know that NO ONE does ....have you? [grin]. The successful ones do! If you are 'self producing' your vocals, then you haven't a hope in h*ll of a great performance. "Never go near a studio without the best producer you can afford". You cannot be on both sides of the glass at the same time...many have tried...ALL have failed. I keep hammering this message home but I know that NO ONE listens....The great, successful performers know this logic from day one. I have spent my whole career being produced by 'the best'.

On the track you sent me, The male vocal performance is 'adequate' but nowhere near what is required in a 'today' production. No 'interest', no 'vocal tricks', no 'movement', no 'today technique'...just a nice unabtrusive voice...the type kids would say 'so what?' to. Think about it! Put on that track, then put on Craig David, Robbie, Eric Benet...and don't say it's not the same genre...there are no genres in POP music...there are either Hits or Flops. Robbie has minimum 4/5 vocal tricks per line....has that track? I'm not being evil here..just constructive. It's these points that make 'great' records. You are so close! But the extra mile is what sorts out the men from the boys.

NOTE:

In 'How To Make A $Million' I give chapter and verse on a stunning technique for achieving a 'today' vocal performance....Ian has followed it and now has phenomenal results.  I developed this unique technique which has changed performer's voices beyond all recognition.  I have never, ever seen or heard anyone else who knows this technique.

Ian wrote that Email to me yonks ago .... he has followed all the points above and more since.  He is now highly respected and successful producing in Germany....his latest stuff is, what can I say?  WOW!  Of course he has been a Member of The Serious Writers Guild now for some two years and concluded the intial 'How to Make A $Million' course and the 'Master Class'.  He also calls me from Germany and Emails me with queries and questions and help on career matters.

Tip of the week:  Picture the scene: you are supporting the main act and they have 'the sound rig from Heaven'.  Don't expect to just 'use it'.  Offer the sound boy money...straight and simple...no: "I'll buy ya a drink later - mate".

Money!

And as an extra, say: "I can't thank you enough, you are so helpful....would you like a hand later [or any time] with the gear?"  [imagine what you can learn, spending time with a top engineer?]

He will think you are wonderful and the on tghe next show together he will be so helpful.

DON'T ----- promise to help and then b*gger off without helping [giving a limp excuse about your mother in hospital].  What do you think will happen the next time you try that trick?

Can you tell I have seen every scenario in the book?

Gag of the Week [no shortage of gags from subscribers!]:

Why so many 'blonde' gags?

"There was this bar and blondes were celebrating in the corner, with beers
shouting, "41 days, 41 days!!!!"

The bartender watched as they more came in and joined the celebration.

He was finally so curious that he went over and said, "Why are you
celebrating shouting, '41 days, 41 days!!!'?" And a blonde held up a 4 piece
puzzle box and said, "The box said 4 to 6 years, and it only took us 41
days!!!!!!!!!!!!"
